It was lunch time. It was sunny. I didn't see any other choice, even though I had to wear my jeans.
The numbers are looking a little better...even though I pushed as hard as I could the entire time. I can anticipate this time will be faster than my actual riding averages.
I was completely exhausted once I arrived back at the car. My heart rate was high and my breathing was labored. I don't think I would be able to do a run after this ride. (I may have...but it didn't feel like it at the time.)
It is best to keep your heart rate low for the ride, because it will only go up on the run. It is better to finish a ride with a heart rate of 125 and have it go up to 140 during the run than finish a ride with a heart rate of 135 and have it go up to 150 during the run.
Anyways, here are the numbers:
Time 26:44
Distance = 7.158
Max speed = 24.9
Average Speed = 16.1
Woohoo! it was great to see my average speed up at 16! 16 is my goal to anticipate a 1:30 bike ride. 16 is much better than 14!
Afterwards, I went to the bikeshop to talk about nutrition on rides.
Pretty much, I got this run down:
Olympic Distance triathlon needs 250 Calories of nutrition every hour. The ratio should be 4:1 of Proteins to carbs.
-consume a Gel before the swim
-Put a bottle of "Perpetuem" from Hammer and a bottle of regular water on your bike.
-Once you start the ride, wait 5 minutes for your stomach to settle in. Drink every 15 minutes whether you feel like you should or not.
-Consume a Gel at the beginning of the run. Supplement at aid stations.
Each minute that goes by on the bike your body is using more calories than you are consuming. It is important to calculate how far you can ride and how much nutrition you need before falling into the calorie pit. If you do fall into the pit (By using all of your glycogen stores), you will not be able to get out. This is called "Bonking" or "Hitting the wall". This only happens when people do not plan their nutrition appropriately.
Once you do bonk, the only thing that you can really do is just sit down, dream of a fat cheeseburger, and take a nap.
I don't want to bonk ever again like I did on my first ride. That was a horrible feeling.
