2/6/2011 - 6.5 mile run (2 with Dog)

So our dog has been getting a little soft. He is a Boston Terrier, and for the most part he is very strong. He is a very large Boston Terrier and has gone on many hikes with us in the past.

Unfortunately, lately, he's been getting a bit 'soft' in his old age.

My wife has asked that I take him on some of my runs.

I figured I should take him for 2 miles just to see how he does. So I put together a path that is 1 mile (with 1 mile return) and a 4.5 mile loop...that way I can continue running to get my full test in.

2 miles apparently didn't phase the dog. I think next time I will be running the 4.5 with him, and me finishing off with the 2. He stayed ahead of me the whole time (except for the sniffing) and it was halfway between a trot and a run for him. I had to speed up and slow down a whole lot while he would stop to sniff something which was kind of hard...but for the most part, I think I was running faster as I had someone in front of me.

It rained for most of the run. My hands, forearms and elbows were freezing. I was going to give up halfway through, but there were no phones, so I kept on going.

I need to remember to stretch after my long runs. Long runs (6+ miles) affect me a lot more than shorter runs. I can do a 3 mile run and return to work and keep going....however when I run 6+ miles, my muscles and joints start stiffening up about 5 hours after the run. I had plenty of fluid after the run this time (and my wife made me protein shake pancakes)...but I neglected the stretching.

It feels kind of stupid that there are really basic things to help a body heal that I hear about but I forget to do, and I have to learn the hard way. I guess this is why there are coaches...But as I don't have any need to spend money on a coach, I guess I will continue learning one blunder at a time.
