Downloading Courses to the Garmin Forerunner 305

A friend and I are doing a 25 mile bike ride this weekend. Since the ride is so long and requires so much navigation through the cities, I figured this would be a good time to try out the course features on my forerunner.

As far as I can tell, the process of making a course in map software to downloading it to your device has not been streamlined as everything else.

The Garmin Forerunner 305 has the ability to hold routes and have a 'little buddy' run the routes with you. So how do you do it?

There are 5 steps: (You see? not well streamlined, yet)

1. Sign up with a map website that allows you to edit courses and outputs files to .gpx or .crs. The .crs file is best, as it doesn't require any conversion once you create the file. Google Earth does not do this. I haven't figured it out in general map software, either (Bing, google maps, yahoo maps, etc)
- I have chosen to use http://www.mapmyrun.com/
This website allows you to create courses, look at courses, "flyover" courses, and share courses on social networking websites.

2. Create your course.
Go to "runs" then "map my run"
Select a starting point for your run.
Double-click at the beginning of the course
Begin your waypoints.

3. Download your course to your PC.
If you can save it as a .crs file, do it. If you can't, then save it as a .gpx file.
In "mapmyrun", there is a small link under the elevation profile that allows you to do this.

4. Convert the .gpx file into a .crs file
-Go to this website:
http://www.gpsies.com/convert.do
-using the 'browse' button, locate the .gpx file you just downloaded
-using the dropdown menu, select 'Garmin Course CRS'

5. Download to your Garmin device
-Open up Garmin Training Center
-Click 'file Importcourses'
-Click "Send to device"

I haven't figured out how to add the speed that you want your little buddy to run at the first time. It looks like it put him as running 6.2mph, which is a running pace.

After you do the course the first time, however, you should be able to change your actual workout into a course with the correct elevation and little buddy speed.

Good luck. I am looking forward to my 25 mile ride this weekend!
