The last time I did this ride was in January. I bonked at Mile 17 and it took me 1 hour and 52 minutes.
This time I made it the whole way (pounding the last 2 miles) in a much better 1 hour and 31 minutes. I felt quite a bit better on the ride. It is much better to have too much in your stomache than not enough :D
I was planning on just going for an 18 mile ride so I just grabbed one water bottle...but once I got to mile 9 I thought to myself, "I have my nutrition, I'll go to 10." Once I got to 10 I thought to myself, "I have my nutrition and some water left...I'm going to do the whole thing."
So that's what I did. The whole ride. This is the second time I've done it. The first time I bonked at 17 miles. It took me 1 hour and 52 minutes.
This time I had nutrition with me and I felt the bonk coming at 22 miles. Finishing the ride was all that kept me going.
For Nutrition, I took the following with me on the ride:
Perpetuem solids
Gu Chomps
Hammer gel
1 water bottle
-I ate 1 solid as soon as I got rolling. This lasted me about 2.5 miles. In the race, I will take a second solid at this point.
-I ate 4 Gu Chomps at mile 6. Those things are yummy! They are like oversized fruit snacks. They woke my mouth up.
-At about mile 9, I started to really feel the chomps in my belly. It wasn't happy but it never is with anything in it.
-I ate 1 solid as mile 13. This lasted me about 2 miles. In the race, I will take a second solid at this point.
-I ate 4 Gu Chomps at mile 17. (too early).
-I used the last of my water at mile 20. This is when my belly was complaining about the chomps again.
-I started to bonk at mile 22. I ate the 2 remaining chomps.
Lessons learned:
1) Increase calorie intake to every 5 miles vs every 6 miles
mile 1: 2 Perpetuem solids
mile 5: 1 Gu Pack
mile 10: 2 Perpetuem solids
mile 15: Gu Chomps
mile 20: Clif Bar?
mile 23: Gu Chomps
That should put me through the first 5k of the run. (Which sounds daunting at this point)
2) Wind is there. Deal with it.
I was pushing against some wind on the way out. I was looking forward to the ride back to raise my average speed. Low and Behold, on my way back the wind was whipping against me much harder. There were a few dirt devils in a nearby field and it just made me feel defeated. I was loosing about 2mph from the wind, nevertheless the 2mph that I was hoping to make up riding with the wind.
3) The run is going to be miserable after the ride. At this point, I honestly hope that I can keep a 10 minute mile pace.
4) Have 2 bottles of fluids.
