My wife gave me the go-ahead to do a cycling class at Mr Crampy's multisport in Redmond.
It was a one hour class that focused on one-foot drills and speed/power intervals.
We used Lemond Trainers. These trainers take your back wheel out of the equation.
I had a few issues. When I first arrived, they asked me if I had 9 or 10 gear rings on the back. I was fairly certain I only had 8. They looked at me and said it's 9 or 10. I said 9.
For the intervals, we were supposed to go into the hardest gear. When I tried shifting into my big ring in front, the chain wasn't able to get up there. When I tried shifting into my small ring in back, the rear derailer began skipping when I would try to get it onto ring 6.
...So my hard gears weren't really available on the trainer.
Afterwards I counted, and I do only have 8 rings on my rear wheel.
Other than that, the class was great. I have toe clips on my pedals right now (My first pair of clipless pedals are almost here!) so that made the switching of one-foot drills difficult...but I made it happen.
Doing these drills really made me feel what I should be feeling. I wasn't just slapping the pedal down, but I was able to go through most of the rotation and feel where the "dead spot" is on my cadence. This really helped me feel out the entire rotation of the pedalling in my foot and now I know what I should be feeling for.
I feel like this class is going to be benefit to help take me to the next level of racing.
