8/26/2011 - Bike Ride, 'shwag', getting into the clipless club...

Since July, I was planning on buying some Yankz shoe laces.  Last week a Shwaggle deal came up.  It was $40 for $80 of merchandise at all3sports.com.

[ADD Moment]...Most people that use the term 'shwag' really don't know what it means.  They use it in front of their kids and use it in inappropriate ways.  Here is the history...It started out as "Swag" which was an acronym for "Stuff We All Get".  There were competition organizers who gave less than ideal prizes and the participants began referring to the prizes as "Shwag", which is "S*#t We All Get".   In fact, the definition of "Schwag"stemming from those roots is now "Low Grade Marijuana".  So now everybody calls it Schwag, including race directors and prize coordinators who are essentially telling people that they are giving bags of junk or bad pot to people.

So I got a notification that www.shwaggle.com had the All3Sports.com deal.

I had to jump on that offer.  I bought several small things that I felt I should have and don't.  This is what I got:
-Yankz speed laces
-Race Belt
-Timing Chip Strap
-Tube/tool bag
-CO2 inflator
-2 extra CO2 cartriges
-Seat mount for 2 water bottles.

Last night and this morning, I set everything up.  I had to loosen the saddle mount to get the waterbottle holder on.

Interesting points from the ride:
-About 3/4 mile into my ride I realized I forgot to do something.  I stood up to peddle and then I sat down...right on the point of my seat.  I didn't tighten my saddle down all the way when I mounted the water bottles so I got to ride on a loose seat.  I thought about turning around but then just decided to go for it.  The ride was a teeter-totter for my bottom with a weight offset from the water bottles.  It was rather annoying.

-Another highlight is that I have finally fallen in my clipless pedals after the ride.  I knew that it would happen at some point and I can finally tell people that I am part of the club.  I was just standing next to the car with one peddle unclipped.  I was drinking from a water bottle when I began to lean to the side of the bike that was still clipped in.  It was a slow fall and I knew it was going to hurt.  I landed on my knee, my hip, my elbow and my shoulder.  The shock rattled my brain and gave me a headache for a few minutes also.  So there.  I am in the club.  Luckily nobody was there to witness me getting into the club.

So here is my ride.  I am pretty happy with the performance.  My average speed was 17.5mph which I am quite pleased with.  I would like to someday join the 20 club...and it looks like as long as I continue riding, I might actually be able to make it.   About 6 months ago, my riding pace on the same distance was 16.1mph.

I came in under my goal of 30 minutes (15 out and 15 back) so that was nice to see.  It was a hard ride but I have learned that I can squeeze more out of my muscles on the bike than I thought.   I used to start to feel burn in my thighs and hold back a little because of the ride distances...but I think I can stay in that "Thigh burning" zone for longer than I originally anticipated.  It was a fast, hard ride.
