I have a friend who does a Standup Paddle Board (SUP) Group at Lake Sammamish every Friday night. I decided to meet up with him 45 minutes before the group meetup and do a swim with him paddling. This makes my wife feel at ease about the whole OWS thing.
It ended up being a great training tool. Through my guilt of making him go "slow", it made me swim faster. I had to change my whole breathing pattern so that I could swim faster and apply more power. Part of me was concerned if I was going to make it through the whole distance at that speed but I figured I'd give it a shot.
Throughout the swim, I felt the same "rush" anxiety that I feel at the beginning of a race. This was a great training tool.
I began thinking about Mike Tyson's Punchout, how in between rounds you can see Little Mac running behind his trainer on the bike.
Why did they choose Pink?
At any rate, I am starting to believe that I would get more beneficial training if I had a "trainer" that was moving just beyond my capabilities.
If I could find somebody on a SUP to lead my swim, and if I could find somebody on a bike to lead my run, and somebody in a car to lead my rides, I think that I will be able to re-create the race "feel" and train at higher intensities. ...Because today? My muscles are letting me know that they got worked out pretty hard yesterday.
So how do I get more out of a workout?
-Buy my wife a kayak and a bike. :P
