I am one of those guys where it takes a little while to make a decision. This weekend is a perfect example. We were at a pet store. We were in the rodent section and both the kids were dropping the emotion bombs on me about buying mice.
It didn't have any reasons why not, as there are small pets...but it still took me quite a bit of time to decide on it. Afterwards (as we were taking the mice home) I thought it was funny how emotionally tangled up I get when making decisions...Even decisions based on buying pets that are food for other pets.
Now Bend is a beautiful place. We really enjoy going there every couple of years to unwind and relax and enjoy the area. One of the prime draws of this race is that the T2/Finish areas are right down in the tourist area of town and it has very high visibility. I thought that it was a great race as my family could do all the tourist stuff while the race was going on and they could still watch the racers. We sort of decided that we could use a trip to Bend this year. I was only going to do one 1/2 ironman race this summer but then I saw the course for Leadman and thought that it looked awesome. Let's go to Bend this year!
So yesterday my wife was on the computer. The Leadman Marquee race was in full swing and she decided to look up the Leadman Bend course. My wife has been a great support in these races. It helps that she has more fun at these races than I do. She does make sure to do her own planning beforehand and likes to know what she has to do. She left the course map opened and left the house for a run. I looked at the course.
For 45 minutes, my world came crashing down. They changed the course. After digesting the changes, I blew a gasket for about 12 minutes.
...But the Cool T2 location is gone! But the run through the tourist area is gone! The run along the river is gone! The run is now less than 7 miles! I couldn't deal with it.
I am over it now and I understand that they most likely had to make the changes because the race is growing, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, it doesn't work in my favor. I generally use the run to make up time that I lose on the bike. This new course makes it much more difficult for me to make up ground. But hey...it is what it is.
So at this point I am surrendered to the changes. I'm not totally satisfied with them, but it is out of my control just as much as it is probably out of Lifetime Fitness's control. I still support the race and the area and the company and I have paid for the race. I just need to let my emotions catch up with the change.
So here is to the new Leadman Course. I hope for a successful race for Lifetime and I hope that I can finish the bike course. :D
